Nokia Belle successor: Symbian Carla caught in the wild

While the whole world waits for Belle to begin rolling out sometime next week.
Symbian Carla is said to be the next major update after belle, thought Nokia has yet to confirm about its existence or whether existing Symbian devices will be able to update to it.
However, the guys over at Nokia Hdblog, an italian Nokia blog site, spotted the (up until now) elusive Symbian Carla from an undisclosed Nokia developer page, it shows logging of bugs related  from Symbian Carla testing.

see it zoomed in:

I'll hold my excitement until we get Belle first!

Unlock your Symbian Phone (N8 E7...) using N9 swipe feature (coming soon)

If  you own an N8 (or any other Symbian device) like me, but love the swipe UI of the N9 (who doesn't). Well, an app that enables you to swipe and unlock your Symbian device just like the N9 will soon be available.
It is pretty awesome, check out the short demo:

It is developed by kolaysoft and according to them; it is fully operational and will help reduce battery consumption.
it doesn't look like the app is fully ready yet though as you can see from the video a few bugs, but i will definitely be getting this once it is ready and available from the Nokia store.

Who says Symbian is dead??

To get WhatsApp on the Nokia N9

WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Nokia and yes, those phones can all message each other using internet data, resulting in no cost to your messaging plan.

In addition to basic messaging iPhone, Android, Nokia and BlackBerry WhatsApp Messenger users can send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages.

There are currently 2million+ Nokia N9 users today (that's more than Nokia Lumia users today).
So how come WhatsApp is not available on the N9?
Microsoft is good at lobbying to get the most popular and useful apps on its platform, as this helps boosts its sales.
I believe this is Nokia's responsibility to make certain necessities available on its products. Nokia has failed to bring WhatsApp to MeeGo and the N9. so its up to you N9 users to appeal for it, the N9 is 2million people strong, that's significant enough to get your voices heard!

Please sign the petition to bring WhatsApp to N9 HERE.
less than 1000 signatures are needed right now to make this happen!

More possible confirmation of the Lumia 910? Dutch online store lists it as coming soon

If you needed more confirmation of a European version of the Lumia 900, then this further confirms it.
A Dutch telecom online store has the Lumia 910 on "coming soon", though no date is reported on when it will be available. It also says it packs a 12MP camera
I guess it safe to say, we might see the Lumia 910 at the upcoming MWC in Barcelona

Nokia issues official statement about Battery issue and updated firmware + audio & camera fix update also in the works

Nokia today issued this statement regarding user concerns over the poor performance of the battery, the audio and camera of the Lumia 800.
Read it below:

We have today received this information from the Lumia 800 team regarding this discussion:

"We’ve seen your comments on the latest update for the Lumia 800 and wanted to take the opportunity to quickly address some points.

First of all, the primary target of the latest Lumia 800 update (1600.2483.8106.11500) was to enhance standby time as well as to bring an improvement to the issue reported by some customers in December, that their phone wasn’t able to access the full battery charge capacity correctly. We can confirm that we have successfully tested that those improvements are working. Additionally, we’ve noted your concerns regarding audio and camera settings and are going to address those in a series of future updates, ie. these will not be included in this specific update. It is also important to understand that only the Nokia Update for Lumia 1600.2483.8106.11500 will introduce the mentioned improvements. If you want to see what update you have installed or what software version you currently have on your Lumia 800, please check Settings>System>About and then tap the box for “More information”. The “Firmware revision number” shows 1600.2483.8106.11500 if you have installed the latest Nokia update for Lumia successfully. To make sure that your Lumia 800 is up to date and always gets the latest features, go to Settings > Phone Update and select “Notify me when updates are found”. Then, as soon as a new update is available for your Lumia 800, your phone will automatically display a notification.

Also always use the original Nokia Fast USB Charger AC-16 or the Nokia Charging and Data Cable CA-185CD that came with your Lumia 800, as they are specifically designed to charge the Lumia 800 as efficiently as possible. Only a charger with an output of 1000mA will fully charge your Lumia 800 battery. If you have several Nokia chargers at home, just check the respective labels or plastic parts as the product name is mentioned there.

Last but not least, the Diagnostic App was designed for internal testing purposes. In general, your battery is fine as long as the full charge capacity is more than 1000mAh. For the future, if you are checking your battery life, more useful information on the Battery status can be found by focusing on Settings>System>Battery saver. It will tell you both your remaining battery life in percent as well as the estimated time remaining, plus the time since you last charged your phone (as soon as you have disconnected your phone from your charger). If you have concerns about your battery capacity, please contact Nokia Care (phone numbers and locations can be found via www.nokia.com/support)."

It's nice to see Nokia is paying attention to user concerns, i am really impressed.
i like the new Nokia

Unlocking you Lumia Phone + Nokia's Network Setup app for Lumia devices (updated to v1.3.0.0)

If you ever wanted to use your Lumia device with another network, you can contact your GSM carrier and get the unlock code to do so.

There's just one problem, Windows Phone doesn't allow you configure the new network settings (like MMS) manually, its usually pre-configured with the Carrier's default settings. you can only manually configure your APN and SMS centre number.
Samsung and HTC windows phones have their own propiertary apps, you can use to help you automatically retrieve and configure settings based on the SIM card in your phone.

and Nokia has theirs too, it's called the Network setup and it recently got updated to v1.3.0.0

Network Setup is an application for users who use more than one SIM card from different operators. The purpose of the Network Setup application is to maintain Internet and MMS services after any SIM card change. When more than one operator network is available, the user is presented with a list to select their preferred operator.

This app works with windows phone firmware 1600.2479.7740.11451 or higher.

I got my Lumia 800 (locked with T Mobile), i was able to unlock it by getting the unlock code from T Mobile Support (you'll have to provide the IMEI code by keying in *#06# on your dialer). i put in my at&t Sim, and was able to manually configure my APN and SMS centre number, however i wasn't able to send MMS since i couldn't configure this manually as WP& doesn't allow you to, so with the Network Setup App, it automatically configured my APN, SMS centre, MMS settings and even Voice mail number.

So if you find yourself in a situation where you use more than one GSM carrier, you'll need to get the Network Setup app, you wouldn't find it if you search from the desktop version of the marketplace, only from your phone directly.
It shows you a list of available GSM networks based on the inserted SIM card, you pick yours and it configures its settings on your phone.

unlocking guide + Network Setup demo:

To get the Network Setup app, open this LINK on your computer (make sure you have Zune already installed on your computer as this link opens the app in your Zune software, ready to install)

New Nokia N8 C7 E7 E6 now shipping with Nokia Belle Inside

Nokia tweeted that they have begun shipping existing Nokia Symbian phones like N8 C7 E7 with Belle Update.
Remember, when they tweeted sometime last week about the update being available for existing Symbian phones starting this week!, well that turned out to be a tweepo (tweet + typo).
This time Nokia reiterated that Yes indeed they have begun shipping New N8's C7's 500's with the New Nokia Belle update.
So if you haven't already bought an N8 or any other Symbian phone, this is a good reason to get one.
This coincidentally comes just in time for the beginning of February, when Nokia said they would begin rolling out the Belle update for current Nokia Symbian users

Nokia records loss in Q4 2011, despite "better than expected Lumia Sales"

If you google "drop in Sales" right now, Nokia and Blackberry are in the top 5 search results!
Despite Launching Lumia 800 at the beginning of last quarter and selling over a Million Lumia phones by the end of the quarter, Nokia still recorded losses, as these sales failed to make an impact in the Smartphone market or even put a dent on iPhone/Android sales (iPhones sold more than 37million in comparism to Lumia's 1 million).

 Report Summary (from ZDnet)
Nokia, the Finnish handset maker reported a 21% year-on-year decline in all sales to €10bn (£8.36bn) in the last three months of 2011. Handset sales decreased by 29 percent to €6bn. In particular, smart device revenue dropped 38 percent to €2.7bn, with shipments falling by 13 percent to 19 million, even though Nokia introduced and sold more than 1 million Lumia smartphones during the quarter.

Even with Microsoft paying Nokia $250 Million to adopt windows Phone

In regards to Symbian, Nokia lost 1.5Billion Euros compared to 1.3 Billion Euros it made in profits from the same platform last year 2010 (obviously due to the N8).

Elop noted Symbian sales figures were lower due to "changing market conditions" and the strong performance of its Windows Phone handsets. I wonder what "strong performance" of windows phone he is talking about, maybe he sees the future?!

The harsh truth is that Nokia isn't going to record HUGE Lumia sales anytime soon, atleast not until Microsoft launches Windows 8 and Windows Phone Apollo later this year but its probably going to take another year for these new products to have any impact on the market.

so in reality, Lumia sales will stagnate until 2013 ending and until then, Nokia will have to put out some Amazing Symbian/MeeGo Phones to disrupt the market and also stay relevant, until Windows Phone can become a major competitor (because right now it isn't).

Look on the bright side, with Nokia counting all these losses, many say it better than what was expected (imagine if it wasnt!!).
The Good news is Nokia will get back on top, most Financial Analysts agree. However, they also agree this rise wouldn't happen anytime soon.

"Lumia 930" shows up on WPBench, (updated)

Well, Guess who showed up on WPBench recently? The Lumia 930, its name appeared on
WPBench, though it could be user generated, so i would take this with a tiny pinch of salt.

What is WPBench?
WP Bench is performance benchmark for Windows Phone 7 devices.
It tests your CPU, GPU, memory, storage, display and battery and allows you to
publish your score to the online charts or compare with the others.

So just maybe this Lumia 930 is the 12MP variant for Lumia 900 that was rumoured about for the past
week and is supposed to be available in the European market later this year, or maybe
someone is just messing with us.
Either way, expect more Lumia Devices to be announced at next month's Mobile World
Conference (MWC).

[UPDATE] it is indeed possible to fake a Device ID using WPBench, in light of this, Lumia 930
on WPBench might as well be dud!

Lumia 710 for $254CAD (no contract) in canada.

Rogers Canada just put out its full pricing for the Lumia 710, as they prepare for its launch in the first half of February.
(prices in Canadian Dollar)
get it for $49 on a 3yr contract
$99.99 on a 2yr contract and
$149.99 on a 1yr contract
$254 (no contract

Of course the news is, the Lumia 710 will sell for $254 (with no contract), that is really cheap for a 3.7inch (same as the Lumia800), 5MP camera that records in 720P HD quality, and a 1.4gHz processor.

This comes as no surprise, particularly here in the US, where it is already offered free from walmart and you can also buy this device brand new for T-Mobile "off the street" (from places like craigslist, ebay...) for as low as $200.
Some might attribute these low prices to the fact that the Lumia 710 isn't doing so well in the market, but we know that's not true, Nokia is simply good at making high quality phones for cheap, and as a result we the consumer get quality for alot less.

Lumia 900 to launch on March 18th for $99.99

At&t's first Nokia LTE Windows Phone will be launched on March 18th (like we said earlier), and will sell for $99.99 on a 2year contract. This is according to a leaked At&t roadmap released by BGR.

Most high end Android Phones and iPhones typically go for $199.99.
So this is a welcome price for this high end phone that features a LTE capable, 4.3inch screen, 8MP and 1.3MP front facing camera Phone, especially if it is to compete in the market.

So we look towards mid-march for when this device will be launched.

Heavy Text message users (young person) send an average of 1200+ text messages a month.
In recent times, one of the major factors when deciding what phone to get is the text messaging feature. An average young person will buy a phone based on the text messaging user experience.
i was young once, and i had no problem with the "messaging" app on symbian, and since i got the Lumia 800 i decided to show the differences between messaging on the N8 and the Lumia 800.

Comparison video:

So in conclusion, the N8 has a full array of settings, it's fully customizable, has features like "save to draft", templates, conversation/inbox view, font size, MMS settings, multiple selection of contacts, among other things but its keyboard (portrait) is too small, no voice-to-text feature and there is no integration with your social media.
However, The Lumia 800 is keeping it simple with its nice keyboard, voice-to-text feature, and full integration with your social media, it lacks a considerable amount of stuff, stuffs like: no drafts, attachments limited to just pictures, settings limited to just 3 switches: facebook chat on/off, SMS confirmation and group text (which to me shouldn't even be an option in settings, it should be on by default), there are no MMS settings, no templates.

I hope Nokia can make the messaging on Lumia devices more customizable in the future (Apollo update) like what we see on current Symbian devices

New Lumia 910 coming in May? 12MP camera?

"There is no smoke without fire" that's the reason why i am writing on this Lumia 900 successor rumour again.
It is fascinating because the Lumia 900 isn't even out yet, we don't know for sure if it's going to be a hit and already there are rumours of a successor (or variant).

Last week, Paul Thurrott of WinSupersite talked about a 12MP version of the Lumia 900 coming out 45days after it's launched exclusively to At&t.

And now Eldar Murtazin speaks of something to that effect, he confirms there is a 12MP version of the Lumia 900, conveniently called the Lumia 910, it will pack a 12MP and is scheduled to hit Europe this May.
see his tweet:

So both stories kind of collaborate each other, so it is becoming very likely Nokia will launch a Lumia 900 variant (aka Lumia 910?) that will best suite the European market, this makes more sense now, as the 900 was specifically made for the US.

Let's just hope this is not the N8 successor we are waiting for, i would hate to see an N8 successor running windows phone!

Up on till now, the Lumia 900 was announced exclusive to At&t in the US, but it's becoming more likely the phone exclusivity will not last more than 90days!
